Explained: Why USMNT star Christian Pulisic & AC Milan are wearing special shirts in 2023-24 Champions League

The Rossoneri are readying themselves for another European campaign, with United States internationals Pulisic and Yunus Musah among those to have been added to their ranks during the summer transfer window.

As a team from one of the most fashionable cities in the world, it comes as no surprise to find that the Serie A giants intend to look stylish when turning out in continental competition. They are also embracing the retro theme that has become so popular in modern culture.

Having won the Champions League back in 2003, when edging out Juventus in a dramatic final penalty shootout at Old Trafford, Milan will be paying homage to that triumph in their shirt designs this season. They have said: “To celebrate the 20th anniversary of the 2002/03 Champions League victory, AC Milan is pleased to present a new special font which this season will accompany Stefano Pioli 's team on all the club's European nights.”

The special design will feature numbers with perforated edges, which offer a nod to the 2003 kit, while the names and numbers are set to be printed in white – rather than the black font which is used in domestic matches. Milan’s throwback styling will get a first outing on Tuesday when they play host to Premier League side Newcastle in the opening round of fixtures in Group F.
