  • City make a U-turn after travel chaos
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Per The Times, England fans will not be limited to low-alcohol beer in Gelsenkirchen during the build-up to their last-16 clash this weekend. The Three Lions opened their Euro 2024 campaign in the city, beating Serbia 1-0, but travel chaos marred the fixture, with fan groups claiming that the decision to serve alcohol of 2.8 percent contributed to the issues.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Said fan groups claimed that most supporters decided to drink elsewhere - in places where full-strength alcohol was an option - and delay their arrival for the game, leading to bottlenecks, and a struggle for fans when it came to transport and access to the stadium. The low-alcohol beer was served because the clash with Serbia was deemed "high-risk", but that will not be the case for the last-16 encounter.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

England will play a third-placed team, although it is unclear at the time of writing who their opponents will be. Currently, they are likely to play the Netherlands, but if the Czech Republic beat Turkey this evening, England will play the third-placed team in Group E - one of Romania, Belgium, Slovakia or Ukraine, who all have three points.
