WHAT HAPPENED?
The 17-year-old winger was being monitored by United for months, and the early signs pointed towards a potential move to Old Trafford in the summer. However, financial constraints and uncertainty over his long-term role led the Red Devils to hesitate, opening the door for Chelsea to make their move. Meanwhile, the Blues orchestrated a “secret blitz” at Sporting, ensuring the teenager was committed to their project ahead of any further manoeuvres by United and ultimately snapped him up for €48 million (£40m/$52m).

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea’s pursuit of Quenda was significantly boosted by Maresca's personal involvement in the negotiations. The Italian head coach spoke directly with the young winger, providing reassurance about his future at Stamford Bridge. The manager expressed confidence in the youngster’s potential, urging him to keep "evolving, learning and improving" his game. The Chelsea boss also emphasised that the club views him as a crucial part of their long-term vision, reinforcing their trust in his ability.
