In the last 20 years only three sides have been crowned Italian champions: Inter, Juventus and AC Milan. The Nerazzurri are the current title holders having finished 12 points clear of their city rivals last season, and Simone Inzaghi's men are well placed to claim the Scudetto once more.

Milan, for their part, are hopeful of keeping pace with their rivals and, despite a disappointing exit from the Champions League, the Rossoneri have shown they have enough firepower to cause every side in the division problems.

For nearly a decade the Italian top flight was dominated by Juventus, yet the Turin outfit's nine consecutive titles now seem a distant memory and their current priority is more likely to be securing a top-four spot in more comfortable fashion than they managed last term.

GOAL has everything you need to know about the favourites, underdogs and outsiders for the Serie A title.

Who are the favourites to win Serie A in 2021-22?

Inter are currently clear favourites to lift the title once more and are offered at just 2/7 with bet365. Defensively the Nerazzurri ended 2021 in exceptional fashion, keeping clean sheets in their last six league matches of the year and this defensive solidity has been coupled with some superb attacking play.

Inter are the top scorers in the division and the flourishing partnership between Lautaro Martinez and Edin Dzeko has helped them rack up some eye-catching wins. Inter have a tough last-16 clash in the Champions League in February against Liverpool, and if they exit the competition they will be able to focus entirely on domestic matters.

The only side with a comparable defensive record to Inter are Napoli and Luciano Spalletti's men come next in the betting at 8/1. The Partenopei endured a torrid end to the year, however, losing three of their last four matches and a first Scudetto since 1990 looks a tall order.

Milan can be backed at 10/1 and, with no European distractions, the Rossoneri will be hopeful of building on last season's second-placed finish to challenge their eternal enemies. The first Milan derby of the season ended 1-1 back in November and the second meeting between the rivals is scheduled for the start of February, a game in which a victory for Milan could put them in a strong position.

Who else is in the running to win Serie A in 2021-22?

Atalanta have never been crowned champions of Italy although the side from the city of Bergamo have finished third in each of the last three seasons. They have also finished as runners-up in two of the last three editions of the Coppa Italia, underlining just what a domestic force they have become under Gian Piero Gasperini.

La Dea can be backed at 10/1 to claim the title, and if their strikers can remain injury free and match their goalscoring heights of last season, the second half of the season could be interesting for Atalanta.

Juventus, meanwhile, are priced at 20/1 and the return of Max Allegri to the club where he won five consecutive titles has not gone according to plan. Juve were immediately playing catch-up after picking up just two points from their opening four matches, while subsequent defeats to the likes of Sassuolo and Hellas Verona have seriously damaged their title hopes.

The side from Turin scraped into the Champions League last term with a win on the final day of the campaign, and they will be aiming to avoid such a nail-biting climax to the current season although pushing for the Scudetto looks a real challenge.

Who are the outsiders to win Serie A in 2021-22?

Roma have not won the Scudetto for 20 years and the appointment of Jose Mourinho as manager in the summer was supposed to help them at least mount a serious push for the top four while having an outside chance of finishing higher.

However, seven defeats in the opening half of the season have left the Giallorossi well adrift of top spot and needing a serious turn-around in the next 19 matches to try and at least secure a Champions League berth. Mourinho's men can be backed at 125/1 to win the title and at 9/2 to finish among the four best teams in the country.
