Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane paying the price for his own success

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Pitso Mosimane has hinted at potentially stepping down following his most recent triumph.

On Saturday afternoon, Masandawana were crowned Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions for the eighth time in their history, with their 53-year-old mentor registering his third league title in just five years at the Tshwane giants.

However, Sundowns' success under Mosimane has evidently come at a price as the former Bafana Bafana coach admits he is fatigued, and in a shock revelation Mosimane revealed that he is contemplating taking a sabbatical.

“I am a bit tired, it’s been four years with no offseason and to be honest I am speaking to my family about taking a sabbatical for maybe one year,” Mosimane told the media.

“It’s been too much. We have been through a lot with my family. We have been through difficult times, expected to win and travel, travelling and making sure the team qualifies for Champions League,” he added.

Nonetheless, while Mosimane’s future is still undecided one player who is surely heading for the exit door in the coming months is talisman Khama Billliat. The Zimbabwean has not committed to signing a new deal at Chloorkop with his existing contract coming to an end at the end of the season. Mosimane though, has lauded the contribution of the 27-year-old to the club.

“It’s good for a player like Khama to win his last championship with us and give him a farewell. Five years with us and he has done exceptionally well for us and we have to accept that he is moving on. He has contributed and it’s good for him to leave on a high note,” he concluded.

Meanwhile, Mosimane and Billiat still have one more game to attend to before they can truly celebrate their accomplishments. Sundowns next travel to the Free State to take on Bloemfontein Celtic, in a game that will certainly have a celebratory atmosphere.
