Abdul Ajagun fires Kortrijk past Gent in Belgian Cup

The 24-year-old scored a second-half goal against the Buffalos to hand the Guys an advantage going into the second leg of the competition

Abdul Ajagun was on the scorers’ sheet in Kortrijk 4-1 win over Gent in the first leg quarterr-final game of the Belgian Cup on Tuesday night at Guldensporenstadion.

Glen De Boeck’s men started the party on a flying note when Lucas Rougeaux headed home with just six minutes into the encounter but the lead was shortlived as Mamadou Sylla put his side at par with a well-taken strike in the eighth minute.

Idir Ouali restored the lead to the home team in the 24th minute and Ajagun who is making his 21st appearance since he teamed up with the West Flanders’ outfit in the summer from Panathinaikos scored his fifth goal of the season.

Serbian midfielder, Jovan Stojanovic then put the icing on the cake with 16 minutes left to the end of the game to seal the victory.

The win gives the Guys a comfortable lead going into the second leg and they could be in line to win their first silverware since 2012 if they continue with this impressive form.

Ajagun will be looking to build on this form when Kortrijk face Mechelen in Saturday’s Belgian First Division A clash.

They are on the 14th spot in the table after garnering 17 points from 18 encounters.
