The USC Trojans head to Ross-Ade Stadium on Saturday, Sept. 13, to take on the Purdue Boilermakers in a Week 3 clash, with both teams still undefeated.
But make no mistake—the Trojans enter as heavy favorites. Can Purdue hold its own against its first real test of the season, or will this turn into a lopsided affair?
USC’s offense has been firing on all cylinders, hitting all the right notes. While the Trojans haven’t been pushed too hard in non-conference matchups—and with Notre Dame looming, that’s understandable—the unit has been racking up yards and points, giving fans plenty to cheer about. Quarterback Jayden Maiava has been at the center of the action, connecting on big plays and keeping the passing game humming.
Numbers back up the hype: USC leads the nation in scoring, ranks tied for third in both passing and yards per completion, and complements that firepower with a defense that’s been relentless. In just two games, the Trojans have amassed nine sacks and 11 tackles for loss, proving they can dominate on both sides of the ball.

USC vs Purdue team news & key players
USC Trojans team news
Wide receiver Makai Lemon has been one of the most explosive playmakers in the Big Ten, already racking up 248 yards and two touchdowns on just 11 catches through the first two games. His 22.5 yards per reception rank fourth in the conference, and his ability to turn short passes into big gains will be a major factor against Purdue's secondary.
Quarterback Jayden Maiava has been nearly flawless, throwing for 707 yards and six touchdowns with a completion rate just shy of 74%, ranking third nationally in passing yards. While he's handled Missouri State and Georgia Southern with ease, the Boilermakers' front line presents a stiffer challenge, testing his poise and decision-making under pressure.
On defense, USC boasts playmakers who can change the course of a game. Defensive end Braylan Shelby has already notched multiple tackles for loss and two sacks, posing a significant threat to Purdue's offensive line. Safety Bishop Fitzgerald has recorded an interception and ranks second on the team in tackles, making him a critical player Purdue must account for in both the passing and running game.
Purdue Boilermakers team news
Quarterback Ryan Browne has been the engine of the Purdue offense through the first two games, showing both accuracy and mobility. In the season opener against Ball State, he threw for 311 yards and two touchdowns on 18-of-26 passing. Across the first two contests, Browne has amassed 481 passing yards with four touchdowns and one interception while also adding 55 yards and a rushing score on the ground. His dual-threat ability will be crucial as Purdue faces a potent USC defense.
Running back Devin Mockobee has carried the workload effectively, especially in the 34-17 win over Southern Illinois, where he rushed 32 times for 126 yards and two touchdowns. While it’s unlikely he'll see that many touches against the Trojans, Mockobee remains a key weapon in both the ground game and red-zone scenarios, combining elusiveness with the ability to power through tackles.
Defensively, Purdue has several impact players. Linebacker Charles Correa has already made his presence felt with nine tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, and a pass break-up, consistently disrupting plays in the backfield. Defensive end CJ Nunnally IV recorded two sacks last week against Southern Illinois and will be a focal point against USC's high-powered offense, tasked with containing quarterback Jayden Maiava and applying pressure on passing downs.
