Liverpool are better placed to claim the three points
The visiting side have momentum on their side. They ended their pre-season campaign with a pair of unbeaten games against Como. Altogether, the Reds lost just two of their six friendly fixtures, which should hold them in good stead. Despite both teams needing to adapt to a new coach, it’s Liverpool who appear more settled at this point.
Newcastle are on a run of three defeats on the bounce, part of a wider sequence of four losses across their last five matches. Two wins in seven pre-season matches don’t make for good reading, which will concern Jaissle. The Magpies’ record against Liverpool isn’t any more encouraging.
The Merseysiders won each of the last three league meetings between the sides. The hosts won just one of the previous 20 head-to-heads in all competitions, which came in the 2025 League Cup final. With Liverpool victorious in 14 of them, including the double last season, the Reds are likely to leave with three points.

Expect history to be repeated
The goal count could rise quite quickly at St James’ Park. Since the start of pre-season, Iraola’s charges have scored 11 goals in six games, averaging 1.82 goals per game. However, with a new centre-half pairing likely to need time to settle, the hosts could capitalise.
The good news for the home fans is that their team have yet to blank since the start of the pre-season campaign. The Magpies scored 10 goals in seven matches, averaging 1.43 goals per game. Six of those fixtures produced goals at both ends.
Both sides have scored in six of the last seven head-to-heads. Meanwhile, all six of those games produced at least three goals. Liverpool’s recent two visits to this venue saw the goal count rise to at least five, including their 3-2 victory here last season.

A familiar foe
One of the more interesting storylines in this fixture is the return of Alexander Isak to St James’ Park. The Swedish striker forced his way out of Newcastle last summer, but didn’t have the season he probably envisioned at Liverpool. It seems that he’s now free from injury, and he’s had a full pre-season with the Reds.
Newcastle don’t need a second warning about how dangerous Isak can be. He’s shown glimpses of his old self in pre-season, scoring and grabbing an assist against Monaco. After scoring 23 league goals for the Toon in 34 games in the 2024/25 season, he will be a clear threat to the home side here.
With Florian Wirtz also finding form towards the end of last season, he will be key in supplying Isak with chances.
- Newcastle United vs Liverpool Betting Tip 3: Anytime goalscorer - Alexander Isak at odds of 2.35 on Sports Interaction
Our analysis: Form of both teams
- Score prediction: Newcastle United 2-3 Liverpool
- Goalscorers prediction: Newcastle United: William Osula, Yoanne Wissa - Liverpool: Alexander Isak x2, Florian Wirtz
Newcastle’s summer was highlighted by the sheer number of changes they’ve had to endure. Players like Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali moved on in search of new challenges, and club captain Bruno Guimaraes joined champions Arsenal. Additionally, head coach Eddie Howe stepped away from his role after five years in charge.
Matthias Jaissle signed a four-year deal to become Newcastle head coach after moving from Al Ahli in the Saudi Pro League. It will certainly be a step up for the 38-year-old. Welcoming Liverpool to St James’ Park isn’t an ideal way to settle into the Premier League. Nonetheless, the home side need to drastically improve on their pre-season form, which saw them lose four of the last five matches.
Liverpool share a similar story. Arne Slot was shown the exit door, and Andoni Iraola was welcomed to the head coach role. The former Bournemouth boss is known for his high-intensity press, which could be a problem for an ageing Liverpool squad. The Reds’ pre-season showed a clear weakness: a huge drop-off towards the latter stages of the game.
The Spaniard must be cautious with how he uses the squad for their trip to Newcastle. This fixture has been entertaining for the neutrals in recent years. However, both managers will be eager to give their teams the ideal start to the Premier League campaign on Sunday evening.
