CAFCL Group D preview: Mbabane Swallows host Etoile, Zesco and Agosto redemption

Swazi champions Mbabane Swallows face what could arguably be the biggest match in their history when they host 2007 African champions Etoile du Sahel on Tuesday.

After holding 2016 semifinalists Zesco United 1-1 away in Zambia on matchday one, Swallows edged Angolan giants Primeiro Agosto 1-0 at home in their second match.

Maintaining an unbeaten run with a draw or win could see them being touted as surprise quarter-final candidates.

Swallows and Etoile have four points each and share a similar goal difference but the Tunisians lead the group by virtue of having scored more goals than Thabo Vilakati’s team.

Now they hope to continue with their fine Champions League run and a win over Etoile guaranteeing them Group D stop-spot.

Veteran attacker Tony Tsabedze and Felix Bandehorst whose solitary goal helped Swallows dismiss Agosto are some of the players Vilakati counts more on against seasoned African campaigners Etoile.

The Tunisians arrive in Mbabane high in confidence after beating Zesco United 2-1 at home in their last match.

Elsewhere in Ndola, the meeting between Zesco United and Primeiro Agosto would be an affair in which both sides seek redemption.

Agosto anchor the group having managed just a point, the same as Zesco who have scored a goal more than them to settle on third place.

Hope for jumping to second position is still not lost for either side, and a high-scoring win could catapult the winner to safety.
