The Buckeyes hand the keys to sophomore signal-caller Julian Sayin, who saw only limited action as a freshman.
Complicating matters, they must also replace the production of not one, but two 1,000-yard rushers. The silver lining? Rising star Jeremiah Smith set the stage as one of college football’s most electric freshmen a year ago with 76 catches, 1,315 yards, and 15 trips to the end zone.
If Ohio State is going to hit the ground running, its backbone will once again have to be defense. Last season, the Buckeyes owned the nation’s stingiest unit, surrendering a mere 254.6 yards and just 12.9 points per game.

On the other sideline, Texas’ offense was nothing short of a juggernaut, racking up a nation-best 7,000 total yards while posting 33 points per outing. With Quinn Ewers off to the NFL, all eyes turn to sophomore quarterback Arch Manning, who flashed his promise in limited duty last fall, connecting on 67.8% of his throws for 939 yards, 9 touchdowns, and only 2 picks.
Manning has a safety valve in Quintrevion Wisner, the lone returning SEC back to eclipse the 1,000-yard rushing mark in 2024. Wisner’s impact goes beyond the ground game, too, as he hauled in 44 receptions a year ago. While Texas must replace its top three pass-catchers — all now playing on Sundays — the quarterback will benefit from a fortress of an offensive line featuring four preseason Lombardi Award watch list honorees.
Defensively, the Longhorns proved equally stout last season, ranking third nationally in scoring defense (15.3 ppg) while limiting foes to just 283.7 yards per game. As always, they bring size and power up front, with edge rushers anchoring the tone. Behind them, Anthony Hill Jr. shines as one of the country’s premier linebackers, fresh off a monster season that saw him post 113 tackles, 8 sacks, an interception, and 4 forced fumbles.
Alongside him is Trey Moore, who chipped in 36 tackles and 5.5 sacks, giving Texas one of the most fearsome LB tandems in the nation. The secondary is no slouch either, led by Malik Muhammad, a preseason All-SEC second-team selection who headlines a deep and talented defensive backfield.
