Week two of the college football season brings an intriguing non-conference matchup as the Arizona State Sun Devils (1-0) square off with the Mississippi State Bulldogs (1-0) on Saturday afternoon.
Arizona State, widely tipped as the team to beat in the Big 12 this fall, has its sights set on back-to-back wins to open the campaign. The Sun Devils put together an 11-2 mark a year ago, ripping off six consecutive victories at one stage before falling to Texas in the Peach Bowl. They opened this season in convincing fashion, handling Northern Arizona 38-19 on home turf.
Mississippi State, meanwhile, is eager to put a nightmare 2024 season behind them. Last year’s 2-10 record included a winless SEC campaign, with their only victories coming against Eastern Kentucky and Massachusetts.
The Bulldogs were picked to finish dead last in the SEC by the preseason media poll, but there's cautious optimism in Starkville that this group can take a step forward. They kicked things off with a 34-17 triumph over Southern Mississippi, racking up 465 yards of offense.

The Bulldogs’ attack is led by senior quarterback Blake Shapen, who split time under center last year but still managed 974 passing yards while throwing just a single interception. Back healthy, he came out firing in the opener with 270 passing yards. Shapen is supported by returning lead back Davon Booth, who rushed for 759 yards at five yards a clip in 2024 and chipped in 79 more last week. Out wide, Jordan Mosley remains a reliable target, while Oklahoma transfer Brenen Thompson made an immediate splash with 92 receiving yards against Southern Miss.
Defense was Mississippi State’s Achilles’ heel last season, giving up 471 yards per game, but reinforcements have arrived through the transfer portal. Red Hibbler, formerly of NC State, strengthens the pass rush, while tackling machine Isaac Smith (127 stops in 2024) anchors the unit. The early returns were promising, with the Bulldogs holding Southern Miss to just 300 total yards.

Arizona State counters with plenty of firepower of its own. Sophomore signal-caller Sam Leavitt looks ready for a breakout campaign after throwing for nearly 2,900 yards and a 24:6 touchdown-to-interception ratio last fall. He looked sharp in the opener, tossing for 257 yards without breaking a sweat. The Sun Devils also addressed the loss of star back Cam Skattebo (now in the NFL) by landing Army transfer Kanye Udoh, who ran for 1,117 yards last year. In the passing game, top receiver Jordan Tyson is back after a monster 1,101-yard season.
Defensively, Arizona State boasts one of the more balanced units in the Big 12. They return key playmakers like last year’s leading tackler Myles Rowser and safety Xavier Alford, while the pass rush is expected to take a leap forward. A season ago, they allowed just 340 yards per game and opened this year by holding Northern Arizona to 330.
Statistically, the Sun Devils were among the nation’s most efficient teams in 2024, averaging 32.9 points per game (30th nationally) while conceding only 22.6 (37th). The Bulldogs, by contrast, finished with a 25.8 scoring average but allowed 34.1 points per contest, ranking near the bottom of the FBS.
