Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2025
Antonio Gates is set to carve his name into the history books on Saturday, becoming the first player ever inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame without having played a single down of college football. Originally recruited by Nick Saban to play football at Michigan State, Gates walked away when Saban refused to let him also suit up for the basketball team. Instead, he pivoted to hoops at Eastern Michigan, chasing an NBA dream that ultimately didn't pan out.
But when the hardwood didn't lead to the pros, Gates turned heads at NFL tryouts, and the Chargers took a chance that paid off in spades. Over 16 seasons in San Diego, the converted tight end racked up 116 touchdown receptions, the most ever at his position, while earning three First-Team All-Pro selections, eight Pro Bowl nods, and a spot on the NFL 2000s All-Decade Team.
Eric Allen, one of the most consistent defensive backs of his generation, earns his gold jacket after a stellar 14-year career with the Eagles, Saints, and Raiders from 1988 to 2001. He broke out early, becoming a first-team All-Pro in his sophomore season thanks to eight interceptions, and would finish with 54 career picks, tied for 21st all-time. A six-time Pro Bowler, Allen was a lockdown corner long before it became a buzzword.
Sterling Sharpe, one of the league's most electrifying wideouts in the early '90s, gets his long-overdue moment in Canton. Though a career-ending neck injury cut short his playing days after just seven seasons, Sharpe left an indelible mark with the Packers — leading the NFL in receptions three times, earning five Pro Bowl selections, and being named All-Pro three times. He now joins his brother Shannon Sharpe, making them the first siblings ever enshrined in the Hall.
Rounding out the class is Jared Allen, whose relentless motor and larger-than-life personality made him a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. Over 12 seasons with the Chiefs, Vikings, Bears, and Panthers, Allen racked up 136 career sacks, topping the league twice — including a monstrous 22-sack campaign in 2011, falling just half a sack short of the single-season record. A four-time All-Pro, Allen is also tied for the most career safeties (4) and holds the mark for most consecutive games with at least half a sack (11).
