The San Francisco 49ers are set to lock horns with the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 2 of the NFL preseason on Saturday night at Allegiant Stadium.

The Raiders opened their preseason with a 23-23 stalemate on the road against the Seattle Seahawks last week. Despite being outgained 392-368 in total yards, Las Vegas showed resilience, running 65 plays with 198 yards through the air and 170 on the ground.

They completed 18 of 32 passes and went 8-for-15 on third downs while going a perfect 2-for-2 in the red zone. Turnovers were a blemish, as they lost that battle 2-1. Still, the Raiders clawed back from a 3-16 deficit in the second quarter, outscoring Seattle 20-7 in the second half to force the tie.

Las Vegas Raiders vs San Francisco 49ers team news

Las Vegas Raiders team news

The Raiders are looking to rebound from a miserable 4-13 campaign that saw them finish bottom of the AFC West — their worst winning percentage since 2014. The poor showing led to the exits of head coach Antonio Pierce and GM Tom Telesco. Now under the guidance of Super Bowl-winning coach Pete Carroll and new general manager John Spytek, formerly of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Las Vegas is aiming for a reset.

Their preseason debut under Carroll showed flashes of grit. After a sluggish first half in which they trailed 16-3, the Raiders roared back with 20 second-half points to tie the Seahawks. They nearly snatched the win, but Daniel Carlson's 55-yard game-winner was blocked as time expired. Carroll summed it up best: "We started really poorly. We didn’t run the ball well in the first half, we didn't really do anything very well. But we stayed close, and it was the opportunity for us to face that and then come back and see what you can do in the second half, and it was a marvelous second half."

San Francisco 49ers team news

San Francisco's preseason got off to a rocky start as they were thumped 30-9 at home by the Denver Broncos. Outgained 368-203 in total yards and limited to just 53 offensive snaps, the 49ers managed 107 passing yards and 96 rushing yards, completing 13 of 27 passes. A 9-0 first-quarter lead quickly evaporated, with Denver pouring in 30 unanswered points. The turnover margin told the tale — the Niners coughed up the ball four times while Denver played a clean game.

Last season was a year to forget for San Francisco, finishing 6-11 as a slew of injuries, including blows to Christian McCaffrey, Brandon Aiyuk, Jordan Mason, and Trent Williams, derailed their title defense. The defense struggled mightily, ranking 29th in points allowed and finishing in the league’s bottom tier for takeaways. Their preseason opener didn't inspire much confidence either, with head coach Kyle Shanahan admitting, "It was frustrating. I liked how we started out, but after that, there wasn’t much to be excited about. We didn’t get many first downs, four turnovers, the three picks, the fumble. ... We made too many mistakes."
