The Miami Dolphins and Detroit Lions roll into Week 2 of the NFL preseason with very different paths so far. Miami opened their campaign with their starters on the field against the Bears, battling to a 24-24 stalemate in Chicago.

Detroit, on the other hand, has been handed the rare four-game preseason slate — a perk (or punishment) reserved for Hall of Fame Game participants. The Lions were thumped 34-7 by the Chargers in that opener but bounced back just days later, grinding out a 17-10 win over the Falcons to even their preseason record.

Detroit Lions vs Miami Dolphins team news

Detroit Lions team news

For the Detroit Lions, the approach will be much the same as last week — no starters. Jared Goff is locked in bubble wrap until the regular season, leaving the quarterback duties to veteran Kyle Allen and second-year prospect Hendon Hooker. Allen, entering his seventh NFL season, has thrown for 211 yards with a 2-2 touchdown-to-interception mark this preseason. Hooker, the former Tennessee star still working back from college injuries, completed 7-of-10 passes for just 38 yards last time out.

Detroit’s ground game featured Jacob Saylors leading the charge with nine carries for 35 yards, while Hooker added 27 yards with his legs. With their top receiving threats resting, rookie Jackson Meeks — a 6'2 target out of Syracuse — stepped up, snagging three passes for 78 yards and a score. Defensively, the Lions have shown improvement, getting torched for 34 points in the Hall of Fame Game before tightening up and allowing just 10 in their win over Atlanta.

Miami Dolphins team news

Tua Tagovailoa was sharp in his brief preseason cameo, completing 5 of 6 passes, but Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel has since pumped the brakes on running his starters back out there.

With Tagovailoa expected to watch from the sideline, Miami will still have experienced arms under center. Zach Wilson, the former BYU standout looking for a fresh start after a turbulent run with the Jets, is likely to get the nod. He went 5-of-9 in Week 1, while rookie Quinn Ewers — coming off his first season at Texas — will handle backup duties after a rocky debut that saw him complete just 5-of-18 passes. In the backfield, explosive second-year runner De’Von Achane is also expected to sit, leaving Jaylen Wright to headline the ground game after a strong rookie season out of Tennessee.

The Dolphins' passing attack last week leaned on Tahj Washington, the 5'10 wideout from USC who hauled in three passes for 53 yards. Fellow receiver Malik Washington, a 5'8 target from Virginia, chipped in four catches for 18 yards. Defensively, Miami surrendered 24 points to Chicago in their opener and will look for more resistance this time around.
