The Philadelphia Eagles (1-1) head up to East Rutherford on August 22 to square off with the New York Jets (1-1) at MetLife Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. EDT.

Philly is coming off a rough outing in Cleveland, falling 22-13. Neither Jalen Hurts nor Tanner McKee suited up, leaving Kyle McCord and Dorian Thompson-Robinson to handle business — and it wasn’t pretty. The duo combined for just 55 total yards, a touchdown, and an interception.

The lone spark came from rookie Andrew Mukuba, who electrified the night with a 75-yard pick-six. The 22-year-old made a strong case for a key role in the rotation, looking every bit like a draft steal for the Eagles.

The Jets, meanwhile, had their own struggles. Their secondary was shredded by the Giants’ aerial attack, surrendering 398 passing yards while three different quarterbacks crossed the 100-yard mark. Offensively, New York’s passing game sputtered as well, mustering just 192 yards combined. Adrian Martinez threw for 114 yards and an interception, while Brady Cook provided the team’s only touchdown through the air.

The ground game didn’t fare much better. Breece Hall was bottled up with just 26 yards on seven carries, while Justin Fields barely made a dent — logging 5 rushing yards and only 4 through the air. Both will need to turn the corner quickly with Week 1 of the regular season looming.

New York Jets vs Philadelphia Eagles team news

New York Jets team news

The New York Jets' passing attack has been noticeably light on deep shots this preseason, leaving some fans uneasy about whether Justin Fields and company will be able to stretch defenses when the regular season kicks off. For now, it seems the coaching staff is leaning on the ground game and quick throws as a safer recipe.

Fields and the starters only saw two series in last Saturday’s 31-12 preseason loss to the Giants, and the aerial game never really got off the ground. The Jets' new $40 million man finished just 1-for-5 for four yards, while the run game carried most of the load with 13 attempts for 55 yards. Fields chipped in with five yards on a scramble — a play originally drawn up as a pass.

On the injury front, Sauce Gardner returned to practice after dealing with a calf issue but limped off following an awkward collision in the end zone. Head coach Aaron Glenn downplayed the concern, saying Gardner was simply kicked on the play and is fine. Meanwhile, Jermaine Johnson finally joined full team drills for the first time in camp, and rookie corner Azareye’h Thomas (shoulder) also made his way back onto the field.

Philadelphia Eagles team news

Jihaad Campbell wasted no time making an impression in his second preseason outing, notching his very first sack in an Eagles uniform by taking down Cleveland Browns quarterback Dillon Gabriel on just the second snap of Saturday’s clash.

But while there were bright spots, the injury bug continues to take a bite out of Philadelphia’s secondary. The most concerning development came with Andrew Mukuba, who had been one of the early revelations of camp and preseason, only to now be sidelined at a time when he was beginning to carve out a significant role in Nick Sirianni’s defense.

Mukuba joins a growing list of banged-up defensive backs that already includes Lewis Cine, A.J. Woods, Tariq Castro-Fields, and Brandon Johnson. For a unit already thin on healthy bodies, losing another potential difference-maker is the last thing this defense needs.

For now, Eagles fans will be holding their breath and sending plenty of good vibes Mukuba’s way, hoping the rookie can get back on the field soon and continue building on the buzz surrounding his first NFL campaign.
