The battle of New York takes center stage this week, though neither team needs to pack a bag for the trip.

The Jets and Giants both call MetLife Stadium home, making this a rare "home game" for each side. Both franchises are eager to turn the page after missing the postseason a year ago, and both will be ushering in a new era under center in 2025.

For the Jets, a wholesale overhaul extended beyond the quarterback position, with a fresh coaching staff and revamped front office also in place. Adding to the symmetry, both squads opened their preseason schedules last weekend with victories.

New York Giants team news

Across the hall, the Giants endured an equally grim 2024, stumbling to a 3-14 record and parting ways with Daniel Jones. Head coach Brian Daboll kept his job but faces a tall order in trying to navigate the NFC East gauntlet. The front office went to work restocking the quarterback room, bringing in veterans Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston while drafting Jaxson Dart in the first round.

Wilson, the former Super Bowl champion, gets the nod atop the depth chart and will have intriguing weapons, including second-year wideout Malik Nabers. In the backfield, rookie Cam Skattebo could become a versatile threat if he develops quickly, but the offensive line — leaky all last season — remains the biggest question mark. Daboll is banking on Wilson’s poise and professionalism to steady the offense, praising his "same-guy-every-day" approach that resonates across the huddle.

Defense might have to carry Big Blue early. The front four is stacked with Dexter Lawrence, Brian Burns, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and rookie Abdul Carter. Add in newcomers Paulson Adebo and Jevon Holland in the secondary, and there’s potential for a major rebound if the pass rush clicks. In their preseason opener at Buffalo, the Giants outpaced the Bills 34-25.

Wilson directed a field goal drive to start, while Dart stole the show with 154 yards and a 29-yard TD to Lil’Jordan Humphrey. Dart also flashed mobility, adding 24 yards on the ground. The Giants piled up 396 yards without a turnover, but the defense was leaky at times, surrendering 7.1 yards per play. Still, a recovered fumble stood as the game’s lone takeaway.
Injury watch: S Anthony Johnson Jr. is out. WR Jalin Hyatt, WR Malik Nabers, RB Cam Skattebo, and WR Darius Slayton are all questionable.

New York Jets team news

For Gang Green, the 2024 campaign was supposed to be the year it all came together — a healthy Aaron Rodgers at quarterback, a roster built to contend, and big expectations in the Big Apple. Instead, it turned into a nightmare. Rodgers sputtered, head coach Robert Saleh was shown the door after just five games, and the Jets limped to the finish.

The offseason brought sweeping changes: former Lions defensive coordinator (and ex-Jets player) Aaron Glenn took the head coaching reins, Darren Mougey stepped in as GM, and Rodgers was sent packing. In his place, the Jets turned to free-agent signing Justin Fields, who will be backed by a fortified offensive line featuring back-to-back first-round picks at tackle. Fields also has a legitimate go-to target in Garrett Wilson, fresh off signing a long-term deal. If Fields can settle in and the line holds up, this offense could look unrecognizable from last year’s.

Defensively, the Jets are out to reclaim the swagger that made them a near-elite unit in 2022 and 2023. Quinnen Williams still anchors the front, with brother Quincy Williams flying around at linebacker. But the real X-factor might be third-year corner Sauce Gardner — if he's healthy and locking down his side, Glenn can get creative with blitz packages and coverages.

In their preseason opener at Green Bay, the Jets cruised 30-10, jumping to a 17-3 halftime lead and never letting up. Fields looked sharp in his lone drive, marching the offense 79 yards on 10 plays before finishing it himself with a 13-yard scramble to paydirt.

Rookie QBs Adrian Martinez and Brady Cook combined for 214 yards and a score through the air, while the defense smothered the Packers, allowing just 188 total yards and converting a fumble into a touchdown.

Injury watch: CB Sauce Gardner, WR Allen Lazard, WR Tyrod Taylor, LB Jermaine Johnson, and RB Kene Nwangwu are all questionable.
