Betting Special: Manchester City favourites to be the best performing English team in the Champions League

The draw for the last 16 of this season’s Uefa Champions League has thrown up some fascinating fixtures – not least for the four English teams who progressed to the knockout stages.

Manchester City, Liverpool and Tottenham will all go head-to-head with Bundesliga opposition, in the shape of Schalke, Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund respectively.

Meanwhile Manchester United – who dispensed with the services of Jose Mourinho as manager on Tuesday morning – face a daunting two-legged tie against Paris Saint-Germain.

It is no surprise, given those draws, that Manchester City are as short as 1/3 (1.33) with bet365 to be the English team that progresses farthest in the competition.

While they have the most straightforward pairing, those looking to back Pep Guardiola’s men may do well to remember that the English champions have only reached the quarter-final stage in two of the last seven seasons.

Liverpool are a 9/2 (5.50) chance with bet365 to go further than any other English side. That's a feat that Jurgen Klopp’s charges achieved last season of course, as the Reds reached the final before being beaten by Real Madrid.

Tottenham are available at 8/1 (9.0), although that price will certainly shorten significantly should Mauricio Pochettino’s men find their way past the German league leaders.

Elsewhere, the 16/1 (17.0) quote for Manchester United to be the best-performing English team is indicative of the scale of the task that they will face against the French champions.

bet365 offer 16/1 (17.0) that all four English sides progress to the last eight of the competition, while the same firm go 66/1 (67.0) that City, Liverpool, Spurs and United all fall at the first hurdle in the knockout stages.

The odds compilers go 13/8 (2.63) that three English teams progress, while bet365 go 5/4 (2.25) that only two Premier League teams reach the quarter-final stage.

Manchester City are certainly well-placed to go through given that they appear to have been handed the easiest draw of the quartet, but Liverpool, Spurs and Manchester United all face exceptionally tough assignments.

With that in mind the chunky 4/1 (5.0) quote for only one English team to go through is tough to ignore and value could lie in snapping up that particular play at bet365.

Odds correct at time of writing. Please gamble responsibly.
