The tournament is held every four years and is a knockout competition, starting with a group stage, followed by a round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final. Clubs qualify by winning their respective continental championship or by having a high ranking in the top-level continental competition.

In a Group F opener on Tuesday, Brazil’s Fluminense takes on Germany’s Borussia Dortmund at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, N.J., which will also host the 2026 World Cup Final.

In another Club World Cup match of the day, Argentina’s River Plate battles Japan’s Urawa Red Diamonds at Lumen Field in Seattle, Washington.

The opening match of Group E will see South American powerhouse River Plate attempt to burnish its impressive record in international play. The Red Diamonds are the 2022 AFC Champions League winners, but they are stepping up in class here in a tough bracket with Inter Milan, Monterrey and River Plate.

The match starts at 3 p.m. EDT at Lumen Stadium in Seattle, with River Plate a -180 favorite carrying a 2.5 goals over/under. DAZN will stream the contest.
