The Denver Broncos kick off their preseason campaign on Saturday night with a trip to the West Coast to take on the San Francisco 49ers.

Denver enters 2025 riding a wave of late-season momentum from last year. They closed out 2024 firing on all cylinders—winning four of their final six games, capped off by a jaw-dropping 38-0 demolition of the Chiefs in Week 18. Over their last three victories, the Broncos averaged a sizzling 32.7 points per game, comfortably covering the spread while doing it.

The 49ers, on the other hand, had a far bumpier ride to the offseason. After looking like contenders early, San Francisco collapsed down the stretch, dropping seven of their final eight games—including lopsided defeats to the Lions, Dolphins, and Cardinals. Despite still moving the chains efficiently (376.3 yards per game), their season unraveled thanks to sloppy turnovers and a defense that couldn’t hold the line.

San Francisco 49ers vs Denver Broncos team news

San Francisco 49ers team news

Brock Purdy had a respectable stat line—8.5 yards per attempt and a 96.1 passer rating—but his 12 interceptions in 17 games raised eyebrows, especially since that matched Nix’s total. Jordan Mason emerged late in the year as the top rusher, averaging a strong 5.2 yards per carry, and he’s expected to see early reps this preseason.

George Kittle continues to be a mismatch nightmare at tight end with 1,106 receiving yards, but the wide receiver room is thin—Brandon Aiyuk is on the PUP list, while both Jauan Jennings and Andy Isabella are dealing with injuries. On defense, the 49ers are shorthanded along the line and in the secondary, and even for a preseason clash, that could be a tough hurdle to clear.

Kyle Shanahan is keeping his plans closer to the vest. While he hasn’t locked in a final decision on playing time, the 49ers boss hinted strongly that most of his top offensive weapons will likely remain on the sidelines for this one.

Denver Broncos team news

Bo Nix quietly put together an impressive rookie showing last season, tossing 29 touchdowns against just 12 picks while averaging 222.1 yards through the air. He completed 66.3% of his passes—more than enough to keep the chains moving—and was well-protected, going down just 24 times all year.

While Denver's ground game wasn’t flashy, it got the job done—Jaleel McLaughlin churned out 4.4 yards per carry and didn’t cough up the football once. Courtland Sutton stood tall as the top wideout, racking up 81 receptions and eight scores, flashing his big-play ability when it mattered. Defensively, Drew Sanders is a notable absence, and A.T. Perry remains sidelined on the PUP list, but the Broncos should still be steady. Under Sean Payton, Denver usually comes out of the gates well-prepared.

Payton has already put his cards on the table, confirming that his starters will hit the turf in this matchup — so fans can expect to see plenty of familiar faces, at least in the early stages.
