Speaking over the PA system, Attwell clarified: “After review, Dominic Solanke was in an offside position in the build-up to the goal, my decision is offside.”

The historic announcement was part of a trial being conducted during the midweek Carabao Cup semi-finals. The aim of the initiative, led by the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL), is to enhance communication and clarity for fans. While Tuesday’s semi-final between Arsenal and Newcastle did not feature any VAR interventions, Wednesday’s match provided an opportunity to test this new approach.

Lucas Bergvall appeared fortunate to remain on the pitch after a rash tackle on Liverpool’s Kostas Tsimikas. Already on a yellow card, Bergvall’s challenge could have warranted a second booking. Nonetheless, the midfielder emerged as a hero in the dying moments of the game as he scored the winner in the 86th minute to hand Tottenham a slender one-goal advantage before the second leg at Anfield.

Tottenham’s focus now shifts to their upcoming FA Cup tie against Tamworth on Sunday. Following that, they will gear up for a highly-anticipated north London derby against Arsenal on January 16. Meanwhile, Liverpool will look to return to winning ways when they host Accrington Stanley in the FA Cup on January 11.
