  • WHAT HAPPENED?

The man involved works in the Premier League but cannot be named after a High Court judge granted an anonymity order last year to protect him "from bad publicity and potential damage to his reputation," according to The Athletic. He stands accused of rape and leaving his victim with post-traumatic stress disorder, according to court documents, and is being sued by the woman involved for aggravated damages for sexual assault and intentional infliction of injury.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The Premier League figure has admitted to asking the woman “if she wanted to earn some cash for sex” when she was 16 or 17, something which then became a "regular pattern" for some years. The woman alleges she was subjected to a “disgusting and traumatising ordeal” after being invited to look around his house when she was 15, and was subsequently handed £150 by the man. The woman says the pair did go on to have sex in the following years but alleges she was under the belief that “if she complied with his sexual demands" it could benefit her career. She says she failed to report the incident at the time because she was scared and has now been left with depression and post-traumatic stress disorder.

  • WHAT HAS BEEN SAID

The allegations have been denied by the man involved and described by him as "dishonest and malicious". His legal defence has also alleged the woman contacted him to offer sexual favours in return for financial gain, stating: "On the vast majority of occasions (he) has declined offers of sex, although he has engaged in sexual activity with the claimant on up to about 15 occasions in total over the years, for which he rewarded her with cash payments in line with her expectations. On one occasion, the defendant engaged in sexual activity with both the claimant and her sister, both of whom were looking to earn some cash.”
