  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    The 2024 Men’s Player of the Year award was given out during Monday's ceremony in Marrakech, Morocco. Brighton's Simon Adingra, Dortmund striker Serhou Guirassy and Paris Saint-Germain's Achraf Hakimi were in contention along with Atalanta forward Ademola Lookman and Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams. However, there was no room on the shortlist for Salah despite his continued brilliance with Liverpool.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Salah has previously picked up the prize in 2017 and 2018 but there will be a new name on the trophy this time around. Lookman was the favourite to win after a year where he has helped Atalanta win the Europa League and reached the final of AFCON 2024 with Nigeria, and he was duly awarded ahead of other top candidates.

    It had previously been reported that Hakimi would take hom the prize, having won a league and cup double with PSG last season and also helped Morocco to a bronze medal at the Paris Olympic Games.

    WHAT NEXT?

    Salah may feel hard done by after being left out of the list of nominees, but can make sure he's in the running next year by helping Liverpool to the Premier League title.
