  • Shearer believes goal record can be broken
  • Kane was on course before leaving Tottenham
  • Says Haaland could reach it if he stays at Man City
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Erling Haaland was at his formidable best once again in the Premier League last weekend, netting another hat-trick, this time against West Ham. Meanwhile, Harry Kane got his first Bundesliga goal of the season after being awarded the European Golden Shoe for 2023-24. Newcastle icon and Premier League all-time top goalscorer Alan Shearer has had his say on what must happen for either of the strikers to break his record and even guessed how long it would take Haaland to surpass him if the Norwegian stays at Etihad Stadium for the long-term.

    WHAT SHEARER SAID

Speaking to Betfair, Shearer said: "If Harry Kane was to come back to the Premier League in a couple of years, then he may have a chance of breaking my record, but there's no doubt that if Haaland stays here for the next five or six years, the way he's going, then he will absolutely break it.

"We'll have to wait and see though; we don't know what's going to happen with Man City and the charges, we don't know what's going to happen with Guardiola and his time at the club. They are big questions, not only for the football club and the manager, but also for the players that are at the club too. But, if Haaland stays in the Premier League then absolutely, he'll break my record."

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

While Haaland is well on track to dispatch Shearer's record, he is still a long way off. The Norwegian striker has 70 goals in the Premier League, 190 off the Newcastle icon. It will take many more years for the 24-year-old to reach the magic 260 and there is no guarantee he stays at Manchester City. It is perhaps more likely that former Tottenham striker Kane will return to England in a quest for the missing 47 goals before he retires.

WHAT NEXT FOR KANE AND HAALAND?

Both world-class forwards will continue firing for their clubs after the international break after recording good starts to the season. Haaland will be looking to bag against Brentford while Kane will have his eyes set on Holstein Kiel.
