Kaizer Chiefs officially out of the PSL title race

Kaizer Chiefs will finish the season empty-handed yet again following Bidvest Wits' 1-0 win over Maritzburg United on Sunday afternoon.

The Students moved to 57 points with three league games to go, meaning Amakhosi will not be able to catch them even if they win their remaining league matches.

Chiefs can only finish on 56 points provided their win all their matches.

On Saturday, Chiefs dropped two vital points at home, conceding deep into stoppage time to draw 1-1 with Golden Arrows.

The Glamour Boys last won a major trophy just before Stuart Baxter left the club for Turkish side Genclerbirligi in 2015.

Last season, Chiefs finished fifth on the log, a whopping 25 points behind current champions Mamelodi Sundowns, but they also reached two cup finals which they both lost.

It was Steve Komphela's first season in charge, and a lot was expected in his second season as head coach of Amakhosi.

The Soweto giants though, are not the only side out of the PSL title race. They are joined by SuperSport United, who are currently placed fifth on the PSL table.

This means the title race is now a three-horse race with Wits, Mamelodi Sundowns and Cape Town City all still with a chance to be crowned champions later this month.
