Kaizer Chiefs' future more important than trophies now - Zwane not desperate for MTN8

  • Chiefs to host AmaZulu on Sunday
  • Zwane says team targeting more than MTN8
  • Chiefs are rebuilding

WHAT HAPPENED: Amakhosi made it to the last four of the annual competition after eliminating Stellenbosch in the quarters. They settled for a 1-1 draw in regulation time in the match played at Danie Craven Stadium on August 28 before advancing after the shootout, which they won 4-3.

However, the tactician - who took over from Stuart Baxter suggests he is not targeting instant success at the club and he is building a team that will dominate on all fronts.

WHAT DID ZWANE SAY? "We’re in a rebuilding process, there’s a lot of things we need to work on. I know how important it is for us to go all the way to the final and make sure that we win the cup, but we’re not going to lose what we want to achieve because we must win the MTN8. We must find the balance first as to how we want to win the cups," the former South Africa international told the media as quoted by Sowetan.

"It’s not about winning this one cup [the MTN8] but it’s about the future of this club as well. So, we’re trying to strike that balance... not to think more about putting everything into this game and end up losing ourselves and the structure because once we do that, the challenge will be if we don’t win it then what’s next? So, we have to make sure we think about the future of this club."

THE BIGGER PICTURE: Chiefs' supporters are on Zwane's neck owing to poor results in the Premier Soccer League. They are currently placed ninth with 11 points after playing eight matches whereby they have won three and drawn two.

Their rivals Orlando Pirates are second with 14 points, and five points behind defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns who have played a game more.

Zwane took over from Baxter late last season before being confirmed as the coach at the beginning of the ongoing campaign. Despite the signings made, Amakhosi have been inconsistent especially in the PSL.

WHAT NEXT FOR CHIEFS? On Sunday, the Soweto heavyweights will host AmaZulu at the FNB Stadium in the first leg of the annual competition. Three days later, they will play Swallows in the South African top-tier.
