Gordinho: Kaizer Chiefs players understand Komphela better

Kaizer Chiefs defender Lorenzo Gordinho has admitted that they let everyone, including themselves down for failing to win a trophy in the past two seasons.

However, the 23-year-old is confident that the upcoming campaign will be different, saying the players now understand Steve Komphela better.

“We’ve let ourselves, our supporters and the club down (by not winning a trophy recently), but we are raring to go for it this time around,” Gordinho was quoted as saying the by The Star.

“Our fans will always support us but having said that, there’s always that expectation of us winning trophies as a team. We need to start doing that, not for our fans only, but for ourselves and the club as well,” he said.

“We are at a point where we’ve reached an understanding of what coach Steve wants to implement,” Gordinho continued.

According to Gordinho, Amakhosi play the kind of football everybody wants to watch, but he feels they just need to start winning more matches to be able to achieve their goals.

“We now need to make sure that we start producing those results. I believe we are unstoppable, performance-wise. We play the kind of football that everybody wants to watch, but I also believe that we really need to start imposing ourselves a bit more and dominate all our games going into the new season. I believe that it is those small details that will see us to winning some form of silverware in the new season,” he explained.

Despite spending the majority of his off-season break with the senior national team for Chan qualifiers, the towering centre-back is raring to go, saying he didn't really need the break.

Gordinho has now set sights on making Stuart Baxter's squads for the upcoming Afcon and Fifa World Cup qualifiers, and eventually cement his place in the national team.

“I didn’t get much of an off-season, but, to be honest with you, I didn’t need it really. I just love to play, I love being on the field and being involved in the game situations. I believe this off-season gave me a chance to work on myself and take my reputation to a higher level as a player,” said Gordinho.

“The call-up was a big thing for me. It meant that my performances at the club were consistent enough. I’d love to be a part of the setup that will feature in both Afcon and World Cup qualifiers (in the near future) though. It’s an achievable goal, I believe. I just have to keep on being consistent and continue working hard and I’ll reach it. It was one of my dreams to one day be called up into the Bafana squad and it happened for me,” he added.

“However, that was not my end goal. My end goal is to make sure that I become a consistent member of the squad. That’s what I want,” concluded Gordinho.
