COMMENT: Where does Orlando Pirates' Wayne Sandilands rank among PSL's top goalkeepers?

Wayne Sandilands has enjoyed a resurgence in recent weeks as he reclaimed the number one jersey at Orlando Pirates.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper was dropped from the match-day squads in the early stages of the current season after making a costly mistake against Highlands Park.

Sandilands then put his head down and worked hard as Bucs' first choice goalkeeper in the Multichoice Diski Challenge (MDC).

His excellent displays in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) reserve league was noticed by Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic ahead of the team's recent Caf Champions League group stage campaign.

Micho surprisingly named Sandilands in the starting line-up for Bucs' clash with Tunisian champions Esperance de Tuis at the Orlando Stadium last month.

The accomplished keeper managed to keep a clean sheet against the defending champions during a Group A encounter which ended in a goalless stalemate.

Sandilands has since cemented his place in the Bucs starting line-up, but where does he rank among the PSL's top keepers?

Kaizer Chiefs captain Itumeleng Khune and Mamelodi Sundowns shot-stopper Denis Onyango come to mind when you talk about the best keepers in the country.

The two accomplished and experienced goal-minders, who have both won the prestigious PSL Goalkeeper of the Season accolade, are definitely in a class of their own.

Then there is Darren Keet of Bidvest Wits and SuperSport United Ronwen Williams, who are both top keepers in the league.

The two South Africa internationals are just a class above Sandilands as they are at the peak of their powers compared to the 35-year-old, whose strength and agility seems to be plummeting.

Sandilands finds himself in the same class as established keepers Kennedy Mweene, Patrick Tignyemb and Tapiwa Kapini, who tend to be inconsistent between the sticks.

This group of keepers rely on their experience as they head towards the end of their careers.
