Tulane, meanwhile, has been one of the AAC’s most consistent programs over the last three years, dropping just 10 total games in that span. In his first season replacing longtime head coach Willie Fritz, Jon Sumrall led the Green Wave to a 9-5 record in 2024. However, momentum fizzled down the stretch as Tulane dropped its last three contests, including the AAC Championship Game and the Gasparilla Bowl.
The Wildcats are looking to turn the page after a frustrating 2024 season. In David Braun’s second year in charge, Northwestern stumbled to a 4-8 record, a far cry from its 8-5 finish and Las Vegas Bowl triumph just two years ago.

The Green Wave thrived offensively last season, ranking 16th nationally in scoring at 35.1 points per game. They combined a balanced attack of 209.4 passing yards (89th) with a powerful ground game that averaged 195.6 yards (25th). Defensively, Tulane held opponents to 20.6 points per game, tied for 23rd nationally, with a stingy pass defense (177.7 yards, 15th) but more vulnerability against the run (145.8 yards, 60th).
Quarterback Darian Mensah fueled the offense in 2024, throwing for 2,723 yards and 22 touchdowns, but his transfer to Duke left a major void. The loss of star running back Makhi Hughes, who powered his way to 1,401 yards and 15 rushing scores last season while adding 176 receiving yards, makes the challenge even steeper.
To reload, Tulane turned to BYU transfer Jake Retzlaff, a senior who started 13 games last year and piled up 2,947 yards, 20 touchdowns, and 12 interceptions. He’ll be joined in the backfield by Arnold Barnes III, a rising weapon who turned 87 carries into 402 yards and six touchdowns as a freshman.

Offense was their Achilles’ heel, as the Wildcats ranked near the bottom of the nation in nearly every major category — 128th in scoring (17.8 points per game), 111th in passing (185.9 yards), and 123rd on the ground (98.5 yards). Sophomore quarterback Jack Lausch struggled through growing pains, throwing for 1,714 yards with seven touchdowns against eight interceptions across 10 games, leaving the program searching for answers in the offseason.
To shake things up, Northwestern brought in Zach Lujan, who built his reputation as offensive coordinator during an eight-year stint at South Dakota State. They also landed a key transfer in senior quarterback Preston Stone from SMU. Stone is looking to revive his career after a broken fibula derailed his 2023 season. Before the injury, he had shown real promise, throwing for 3,197 yards and 28 touchdowns with only six interceptions.
