Last year’s Hoosiers finished 11-2 overall and 8-1 in conference play, riding a balanced roster and stingy defense to new heights. This offseason, however, they saw several key departures, including quarterback Kurtis Rourke and a handful of offensive playmakers. Cal transfer Fernando Mendoza steps in under center after completing nearly 69 percent of his passes in 2024, and he’ll benefit from a fortified offensive line that returns three starters and adds Notre Dame’s Pat Coogan and Colorado’s Kahlil Benson. Indiana also reloaded its skill positions through the transfer portal, bringing in Maryland’s Roman Hemby and UAB’s Lee Beebe Jr. at running back, along with five new pass-catchers to deepen the receiving corps.
Defensively, Indiana proved to be one of the toughest units in the country last fall, finishing second nationally in total defense and sixth in scoring defense. While the schedule may have padded those numbers a bit, the Hoosiers still held their own against heavyweights like Ohio State and Notre Dame. Edge rusher Mikail Kamara, linebacker Aiden Fisher, and cornerback D’Angelo Ponds headline a defense that returns star power at every level. Cignetti also bolstered the depth with four additions apiece to the defensive line and secondary.
Old Dominion Monarchs team news
As for Old Dominion, the Monarchs bring back a battle-tested defense led by linebacker Jason Henderson, who has already racked up 438 career tackles. He’ll be joined by fellow veterans Koa Naotala, Mario Thompson, and Jaheel Culbreath, forming a linebacking corps that should rank among the Sun Belt’s best. The defensive line, however, took a hit from the transfer portal, though the secondary gained reinforcements.
Offensively, ODU’s strength lies in its ground game. The Monarchs ranked 14th nationally in rushing last season, averaging nearly 210 yards per contest. Quarterback Colton Joseph returns after a breakout freshman year in which he ran for 647 yards, threw for 1,627, and totaled 22 touchdowns. The challenge will be replacing leading rusher Aaron Young and rebuilding a receiver room that lost almost all of its contributors. The offensive line is solid at the edges, but the interior will need to be retooled to sustain success.
