Lokomotiv Moscow have on Monday confirmed the death of Under-21 player Aleksey Lomakin, adding that investigations are being carried out to confirm the cause.
Early reports, including from Russian daily Moskovskij Komsomolets, suggest that the 18-year-old was found frozen to death in the Moscow district of Brateyevo on the morning of December 3, though nothing has yet been confirmed.
It is said that initial concerns were raised by the player's mother on November 30, when Lomakin had left for the club's medical centre before joining a friend for a night out.
When her son did not return that night, she attempted to call his phone, which reports say was left in a taxi along with his backpack.
An additional report from Russian language outlet Meduza states that the player's friend, Ivan, said that the pair had been out drinking but could not remember much of where they spent their time.
As stated by Lokomotiv, however, full investigations are underway.
“FC Lokomotiv is saddened to report that Loko U21 player Alexey Lomakin has died in Moscow,” the club tweeted on Monday. “The investigation is ongoing.
“We are shocked by the tragedy. FC Lokomotiv would like to express our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Alexey.”
The club also confirmed that they will hold a minute of silence for Lomokin ahead of kick off in their upcoming Russian Cup match with Rubin Kazan.
“The players will come out for the quarter-final match of the Russian Cup in mourning and without any music. The match will begin with a minute of silence.”
Lomakin, a graduate of the Lokomotiv youth system, had been at the club since 2007.
In the current season of the youth championship, he had played three games for the club. The youngster had only made his debut in 2018.
