Liverpool wonderkid Rio Ngumoha has shown that he is ready to play big role

Arne Slot's Liverpool completed their pre-season tour of Asia with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Yokohama F Marinos. While pre-season results should always be viewed with caution, this game offered a tantalising glimpse into the potential of the new-look Liverpool under Slot.

The match, played on a challenging pitch, presented a stern test of character and tactical adaptability, one that the Reds ultimately passed with flying colours. From debutant Hugo Ekitike's promising cameo to Rio Ngumoha's electric performance and Dominik Szoboszlai's midfield dominance, there was no shortage of talking points.

Ekitike's encouraging debut hints at Premier League potential

All eyes were on Ekitike, making his first appearance in a Liverpool shirt just days after completing his move. The young striker played 45 minutes and provided fans with plenty of reasons for optimism. Despite the difficult pitch conditions, Ekitike displayed impressive touch, intelligent movement, and a good understanding with his new teammates. He nearly marked his debut with a cheeky backheel goal, only to be denied by a good save.

What stood out most was Ekitike's combination of physical and technical attributes. Standing tall and possessing impressive pace, he appears well-equipped to handle the rigours of the Premier League. His ability to link up play, coupled with his intelligent runs, suggests he could offer something different to Liverpool's attacking options.

He's tall, isn't he? He's absolutely massive and he looked it on the pitch. He's quick as well. He's got that pace, which both of those things he's going to need in the Premier League.

The question now is whether Ekitike can force his way into Slot's plans for the Community Shield. With Darwin Nunez seemingly out of favour and the potential arrival of Alexander Isak still uncertain, there's a golden opportunity for Ekitike to stake his claim for a starting role. Can he quickly adapt to Slot's tactical demands and demonstrate the defensive discipline required of a modern forward? Only time will tell, but his debut performance certainly suggests he has the potential to be a valuable asset.

Ngumoha brilliance continues to turn heads

While Ekitike's debut was a major talking point, the continued emergence of Ngumoha is perhaps even more exciting for Liverpool fans. The 16-year-old winger produced another dazzling display, capped off with a stunning solo goal that showcased his exceptional dribbling ability and composure.

Ngumoha picked up the ball just inside the Yokohama half, drove at the defence, and weaved his way past defenders before unleashing a composed finish into the bottom corner. It was a goal that epitomised his fearlessness and natural talent.

I don't want to pile pressure on a 16-year-old but he just keeps doing crazy things in these pre-season friendlies. He keeps being one of the standout players. The question now is whether Doak can realistically challenge for a first-team place this season. With the potential arrival of Isak adding to Liverpool's attacking depth, opportunities may be limited.

However, Ngumoha's performances have been so impressive that it's becoming increasingly difficult to ignore him. His ability to create chances and his willingness to take on defenders make him a valuable option off the bench, and he could well feature more prominently than many expect.

Szoboszlai's midfield masterclass creates selection headache

Szoboszlai's pre-season form has been nothing short of sensational. The Hungarian midfielder has excelled in a deeper role, dictating the tempo of the game, breaking up play, and launching attacks with his incisive passing range.

His energy, physicality, and technical ability make him a complete midfielder. He offers a different dimension to Liverpool's midfield, combining defensive solidity with creative flair. He looks good in that deep role, doesn't he? That seems to really suit him.

He also can fire passes through the lines from that deeper role really nicely. He's got great energy to get around the pitch." His performances have created a selection dilemma for Slot.

With Ryan Gravenberch and Alexis Mac Allister also vying for starting roles, the manager faces a tough decision. Can Slot find a way to accommodate all three players in his starting eleven? Or will one of them have to settle for a place on the bench? It's a welcome problem for the manager to have, but one that he will need to resolve quickly.

Frimpong shines with goal contribution

So much of the talk around Frimpong and analysis of his game over the summer has been about "wow he's so quick". He's lightning. His pace is unbelievable...

But I thought he showed today that he has got real ability. His assist was very, very good [with a] nice cross into the box.
