There had been rumours of a move but Goal and Spox have learned the club hasn't made an approach, and Martinez would only return to Spain with former club Athletic Bilbao.

Liverpool luring Thiago Alcantara away from Bayern Munich would be “a better signing that Lionel Messi going to Manchester City”, claims Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney.

The former United striker told talkSPORT: “I think it is City or Liverpool [for the Premier League title], and if Liverpool get Thiago from Bayern Munich, I think it is done. That is a better signing than Messi going to Man City.”

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has offered to step down if Lionel Messi agrees to stay at Barcelona, according to Spanish broadcaster TV3.

They claim the desperate attempt by the beleagured president to prevent Messi's departure would involve the forward publicly saying he will not leave Camp Nou, having indicated earlier this week he wishes to depart.

However, the reports claim it is too little and too late, with Messi already set on moving on.

Suarez breaks silence amid Barcelona exit rumours


Luis Suarez has hit back at comments made by his former lawyer Alejandro Balbi that suggested the Uruguayan's future would be linked to that of Lionel Messi.

The appointment of Ronald Koeman, a club legend, was seen as a move to appease players and fans, but the Dutch head coach is reported to have told Suarez to find a new team as he is not part of his long-term plans in Catalunya.

Chelsea's summer recruitment drive has continued with the signing of Malang Sarr on a free transfer.

The 21-year-old left-sided centre back moves to Stamford Bridge on a five-year deal after leaving Ligue 1 side Nice at the end of the 2019-20 season.

Sarr will spend the 2020-21 season out on loan, Chelsea have confirmed - and, with 119 senior appearances for Nice already under his belt, he is unlikely to be short on offers.

Chelsea director Marina Granovskaia told the club website: "The opportunity to sign Malang was one we could not miss. He is a tremendous prospect and we will be monitoring him closely during his loan period, hoping he will soon be back at Chelsea. We are very happy to welcome him to the club today."

Thiago Silva took to social media on Wednesday to bid farewell to the Paris Saint-Germain faithful ahead of his anticipated move to Chelsea. 

Silva joined PSG in 2012 from AC Milan and went on to lead the French side to seven Ligue 1 titles in eight seasons, part of a total haul of 23 trophies during his time at Parc des Princes. 

But the Brazil defender was not offered a fresh contract at the end of his current deal, instead signing a temporary extension which came to an end with PSG's defeat to Bayern Munich in Sunday's Champions League final, the first in the club's history.
