FC Pune City have sent a statement of intent to competing teams in the Indian Super League after securing the signing of Brazilian winger Marcelo Leite Pereira, better known as Marcelinho, for the upcoming season, Goal can confirm.
The team, coached by Antonio Habas, are understood to have signed the former Delhi Dynamos player on a one-year-contract, the net worth of which is believed to be a whopping $350,000.
The 30-year-old winger sizzled for Delhi Dynamos in the 2016 edition with his pace and trickery, driving the team to the semifinals on the back of some electric performances, which saw him bag 10 goals and 5 assists.
The 2016 ISL Golden Boot winner was thought to be in high demand for the coming season but FC Pune City have gazumped their rivals by offering him a lucrative contract.
The Orange and Purple brigade have already poached Uruguayan striker Emiliano Alfaro, who played for NorthEast United FC in the previous season, as they ramp up their attacking arsenal significantly.
Moreover, Marcelinho will link up with Kean Lewis, snapped up by Pune in the Player Draft, who was his partner-in-crime on the wings at Delhi last season.
Pune have already made some shrewd acquisitions in the Indian player draft by signing promising midfielder Isaac Vanmalsawma and defender Nim Dorjee Tamang.
FC Pune City, who have never reached the semifinals of the tournament, will hope that the former Atletico Madrid B winger drives the team past the group stages and ultimately the title under the guidance of Antonio Habas.
