  • WHAT HAPPENED?

    At just 10 years of age, Atkinson was killed playing the sport she loved. During a training session at Kendal Rugby Club in Cumbria, a car crashed onto the pitch – claiming the life of Atkinson and leaving an eight-year-old girl requiring hospital treatment.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

    Atkinson dreamt of one day turning out for WSL side Manchester United, with her family saying in an emotional statement: “Many who know her, and who know her determination to improve and win, had no doubt she would achieve her goal to one day to play for Manchester United. She was a force of nature. She was so special, she was too good for this world.

    “Poppy touched so many lives, it was easy to see why, her energy, character, spirit and passion for football was infectious and touched huge numbers of people. The hole in our lives and so many around us that Poppy leaves is enormous, we will never be whole again.”

    Manchester United said, after learning that England internationals Ella Toone and Kobbie Mainoo were Atkinson’s favourite players: “On behalf of Ella, Kobbie and everyone at Manchester United, we send our heartfelt condolences to Poppy's family and friends for their devastating loss. Rest in peace Poppy.”

    Several members of England’s Lionesses have posted tributes of their own on social media. Toone said: “Heartbreaking. Sending all my love to the family at this sad time.” Euro 2022-winning captain Williamson wrote: “Such tragic news! My thoughts are with family, friends and teammates. I can’t begin to imagine your loss. RIP Poppy.” Fellow Cumbrian Stanway said: “Little Lioness – Poppy you will always play a special role in the football world and in the Cumbrian community.” Chloe Kelly added: “My thoughts are with Poppy’s family, teammates & friends”, while United defender Millie Turner said the news was “heartbreaking”.

    Cumbria Police arrested a 40-year-old man at the time, holding him on suspicion of dangerous driving. He remains in custody but police claim there is “no indication to suggest that this incident was a deliberate act.”
