  • WHAT HAPPENED

The San Jose Earthquakes have released an 8-bit style video game style tribute recreating Eric Wynalda's game-winning goal from the inaugural MLS match in 1996. This pixelated tribute showcases the historic moment when Wynalda found the net in the 88th minute, securing a 1-0 victory for the then-San Jose Clash against D.C. United. The 8-bit style video serves as a bridge between the league's past and present, highlighting how far MLS has come in its 30-year journey.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

The 8-bit video is part of a larger celebration of MLS's 30th season. The Earthquakes are set to honor legends from both the original San Jose Clash and D.C. United teams during their upcoming match on April 6, 2025 - exactly 29 years after the inaugural game. As per the statement, several players from both 1996 teams will attend the Earthquakes’ next game and participate in a special on-field presentation.

  • WHAT’S NEXT?

The San Jose Earthquakes have endured a tough season so far, winning just two of their six league games and sit 10th on the MLS table. They face DC United next on April 6 at the PayPal Park before going on the road to face LAFC on April 12 after that in the league.
