Play-offs in the WSL?! Top flight set to consider adopting end-of-season format used in France with desire for champions to play NWSL winners

The Telegraph reports that the Women's Professional Leagues Ltd is considering introducing title play-offs from the 2026/27 season, which may be similar to the four-team system that the French top-flight uses.

The report adds that there is a desire for the WSL champions to then play a match against the winners of the National Women's Soccer League. This comes at a time when reports have surfaced that the WPLL is considering removing relegation from the WSL and Women's Championship as women's football braces itself for big changes.

The Telegraph adds that another proposal involves the WSL splitting into two smaller divisions each season once each team have played each other home and away. This is a similar system to the one in place in Scotland.

It remains to be seen if these changes will be ushered in or if the current WSL model will be in place for the foreseeable future.
