PGMOL issue update on David Coote and suspended referee's 'welfare' as investigation into Jurgen Klopp comments and alleged drug use continues

Coote, who has officiated in the English top flight since 2018, is currently at the centre of controversies stemming from a video that shows him making derogatory remarks about Liverpool and their former manager, Klopp. Alongside the video involving alleged offensive comments, further allegations surfaced from a separate incident during the 2024 European Championship.

According to The Sun, Coote allegedly filmed himself in a hotel room consuming a white powder through a rolled-up U.S. dollar bill. The reported incident is said to have occurred on July 6, just one day after Coote worked as a support VAR official for the Euro 2024 quarter-final between Spain and Germany. The allegations include claims that Coote shared the video with a friend, which later surfaced publicly.

In response to these serious accusations, the PGMOL released a formal statement affirming its commitment to a comprehensive investigation but also emphasized that the referee's well-being is also taken care of.

"We are following an internal process and taking the allegations into David Coote’s conduct very seriously as part of our ongoing full and thorough investigation," the PGMOL said in a statement.

"Whilst David remains suspended, his welfare continues to be important to us and he is aware of the support network available to him."

These recent allegations have cast a shadow over Coote's career. The release of video footage, coupled with photographic evidence reportedly showing him engaging in drug use, has raised serious questions about his conduct and professional integrity.
