MLS attendance 2023: Ranking the average number of fans for every club's stadium, including the most supported American team

MLS stadiums are now above the 20,000 average fans per match threshold, but numbers vary greatly by venue.

Atlanta United, for example, are kings of attendance, bringing in nearly 50,000 fans per game, while the Chicago Fire have recently struggled to pack the stands of Soldier Field.

GOAL takes a look at how all the clubs rank in terms of average attendance.

    As a co-inhabitants of the Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta United have consistently led MLS in attendance, making them one of the largest commercial success stories of MLS expansion. The Red & Blacks lead yet again in terms of average attendance in MLS so far.

    Charlotte FC's ownership strategy is based on owning an interest in the entire local sports industry rather than just one team, similar to Atlanta United.

    Despite a poor start to their 2023 season, Charlotte still has the second-highest attendance.

    After a below-par start, the Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment-owned club is starting to see some better results and has climbed back into the playoff picture.

    Minnesota United played their inaugural MLS match in 2017 and have made the playoffs in every season apart from their first. A key has been their home support and they are again hitting capacity on a regular basis.

  • 16New England Revolution

    After a successful regular season in which they won the Eastern Conference by a margin of 19 points in 2021, the Revolution stumbled out of the playoff race in 2022.

    It's been a bright start to 2023, and matchday 10 brought a major spike to their home attendance with a showing of 30,080 for their game against FC Cincinnati.

    FC Dallas boasts some of the best and most exciting offensive play in MLS and fills Toyota Stadium to near capacity on a regular basis.

    Real Salt Lake just picked up their first two home wins of 2023, and fans have thus far been patient as the squad warms up to the new campaign.

    Saputo Stadium is a soccer-specific stadium at Olympic Park in Montreal. It is currently the second-largest soccer stadium in Canada.

    An 18,000-person capacity in the cozy DRV PNK Stadium limits how high they can rank, but they've already increased average attendance by more than 4,000 per match this season.

    Houston Dynamo fans have had a lot of hopes after their recent takeover by Ted Segal, but will they improve in attendance in this new era? They averaged 16,426 fans in 2022, so it's been a slight uptick to this point.

    Home attendance for the Vancouver Whitecaps has fallen well short of expectations over the last couple of seasons and the club will be hoping for better support in the 2023 season.
