Leverkusen were aiming to defend their DFB Pokal title as they took the field in the semi-final of the competition on Tuesday against German third-tier team Arminia Bielefeld. The reigning champions, however, were knocked out of the competition after they went down 2-1 against the lower-division club. After the game, Leverkusen star and former Arsenal midfielder Xhaka was spotted furiously quarrelling with the fans while pointing his finger at them.

Xabi Alonso's side, who were one of the most talked-about sides in European football last season after winning the Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal titles, are set to end the 2024-25 campaign without a trophy. They have already been knocked out of the Champions League by Bayern Munich and are six points behind Vincent Kompany's men in the Bundesliga.

The reigning German champions will be back in action in the Bundesliga on Saturday as they take on Heidenheim in a crucial away fixture.
