  • Van de Beek leaves Utd on loan
  • Eintracht hold €14m buy option
  • Erik ten Hag has no use for midfielder
  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Van de Beek has joined the German club on loan until the end of the 2023-24 season. Eintracht reportedly also have the option to make the move permanent in the summer for a fee of €14 million (£12m/$15m) including add-ons, which means the midfielder's nightmare spell at United may finally be over.

    WHAT EINTRACHT FRANKFURT SAID

Eintracht sports director Markus Krosche expressed his delight after confirming Van de Beek's arrival on Monday morning, telling the club's official website: “Donny van de Beek fits our game idea perfectly and is an important piece of the puzzle for our team. He brings a wealth of international experience that our young players will benefit from. Donny exudes a goal-scoring threat and, above all, should put our attackers in promising positions.”

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

Van de Beek initially joined United from Ajax in September 2020 for £40m ($51m), after establishing himself as one of the top young midfielders in Europe. The Netherlands international has since been unable to settle at Old Trafford, though, with just two goals recorded across 62 appearances in all competitions, and he has yet to start a Premier League game for Erik ten Hag's side in 2023-24.

WHAT NEXT FOR VAN DE BEEK?

Van de Beek will hope that his move to Germany represents a proper fresh start, having failed to prove his worth during his last loan spell at Everton in 2022. The 26-year-old joins an Eintracht side sitting sixth in the Bundesliga table, nine points outside the top-four. United, meanwhile, have begun their proposed January clear-out under new minority shareholder Sir Jim Ratcliffe, with the likes of Anthony Martial, Jadon Sancho and Casemiro being tipped to join Van de Beek in departing Old Trafford as Ten Hag seeks to turnaround the club's nightmare start to the season.
