    WHAT HAPPENED?

Gomes was involved in a terrifying head collision with Reims midfielder Amadou Kone, who was subsequently sent off for what the referee deemed a dangerous challenge. The game was stopped for over 15 minutes as Lille's medical team tended to the ex-Manchester United star, who was eventually stretchered off and taken to hospital. Soon after, Manchester United shared a heartfelt message for their former academy graduate.

  • THE BIGGER PICTURE

After their 2-0 victory over Reims, Lille reported that Gomes was conscious throughout the ordeal and that hospital tests and evaluations had been 'reassuring'. Gomes has now been discharged and has sent a positive message to fans, while joking that someone should remind him next time "not to jump for no more headers".

  • WHAT GOMES SAID

In the Instagram post, Gomes stated: "Just wanted to let everyone know that I'm okay, I'm back home, I've been looked after, and I'm feeling good. I just want to thank all the medical staff at the club, all the medical staff at the hospital that looked after me.

"It was a crazy collision, these things happen in football, but the most important thing is that I'm okay, we won, three points.

"I just want to thank the fans also from both teams, obviously our home supporters that support us week in, week out, and the fans at Reims for the support. Thank you."
