    CAS makes ruling

According to ESPN, which reviewed the contractual documents, Alves is obliged to make a $5M payment. The contract included a penalty clause stating that “throughout the duration of this agreement, should the Player decide to terminate it early without just cause, he will be required to pay the Club the amount of USD 5,000,000 net, free of any taxes or withholdings, as compensation.”

    FIFA’s initial ruling favored Alves

At the center of the case was a contractual clause stipulating that if the player became involved in a “public scandal,” Pumas had the right to rescind the agreement and claim financial compensation.

In May 2024, FIFA’s Dispute Resolution Chamber had initially sided with Alves, deciding he owed around $160,000 plus interest. Pumas, however, appealed the ruling, taking the case to CAS.

    Six-month review

After both parties presented their arguments during a March 2025 hearing, CAS spent six months reviewing the matter before issuing its decision on Sept. 1, 2025. The tribunal overturned FIFA’s prior resolution and confirmed Pumas’ position in full.
