  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Emma Hayes has named a much-changed roster for the USWNT's upcoming friendlies with England and the Netherlands.

Although 15 of the 22 players who carried the U.S. to gold at the Paris Olympics remain, some key faces are missing - most notably the USWNT's Triple Espresso starting attacking trio of Sophia Smith, Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson, all three of which were named in the top 10 of 2024 Ballon d'Or voting but will miss the matches with what U.S. Soccer described as "nagging injuries."

Veterans Lindsey Horan, Alyssa Naeher and Rose Lavelle remain as anchors, as does veteran forward Lynn Williams on what is otherwise a relatively youthful roster - there are just three players with more than 100 caps. Other forwards on the squad include Jaedyn Shaw and Alyssa Thompson, both of whom had breakout moments in last month's victories over Iceland.

Hayes also called up uncapped players such as Man United keeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce and Utah forward Ally Sentnor. All seven first timers from the USWNT's October camp - including debutant goalscorer Emma Sears - have been named to the squad. In total, 14 players have 20 caps or fewer, while only five are older than 30.

Also on the squad is Lily Yohannes, who last week announced that she would forgo her eligibility to represent the Netherlands and spend her international career with the USWNT. This is the third U.S. call-up for Yohannes, who has three goals in 10 appearances for Ajax this season across all competitions.

The U.S. roster features 18 NWSL players and six players from European clubs. Three players – Casey Krueger and NWSL semifinal hero Hal Hershfelt of the Washington Spirit, and defender Emily Sams of the Orlando Pride -- will play in next Saturday's 2024 NWSL Championship Game. A total of 24 players made the training camp roster, with 23 to suit up on each matchday.

  • WHAT EMMA HAYES SAID

The USWNT coach highlighted the upcoming fixtures as ideal preparation for the 2027 World Cup.

"In terms of our schedule, this is the end of a wonderful year, but we’re still at the beginning of our process of building towards qualifying for the next World Cup,” Hayes said in a statement. “So, this trip will be about testing ourselves against two world-class teams with opportunities to develop our roster. We will continue to build relationships on and off the field and I’m really excited to work with this group as we continue to set the stage for 2025.”

    WHAT NEXT FOR THE USWNT?

The U.S. play England at Wembley on Nov. 30 in a homecoming for Hayes, the former Chelsea manager and reigning Ballon d'Or women's coach of the year, before taking on the Netherlands on Dec. 3 at Den Haag Stadium. They are the final fixtures of 2024 for the USWNT and for Hayes, who is unbeaten in her first 13 matches in the role.
