Barcelona and Spain star Aitana Bonmati sends out message after being discharged from hospital following treatment for viral meningitis ahead of Euro 2025

Bonmati was diagnosed with viral meningitis last Friday, leading to her immediate hospitalisation and casting serious doubt on her availability for Euro 2025 in Switzerland. Although she has now been discharged, Bonmati will not travel with the Spanish national team for their group stage opener against Portugal, as per Marca. A statement from the RFEF read: "After several days hospitalized with viral meningitis, Aitana Bonmati has been discharged from the hospital and will join the Spanish national team in the coming days."

Spain will begin their Euro campaign without their Ballon d’Or-winning midfielder, who remains one of La Roja’s most influential players. With the group stage looming, the Spanish FA has until the day before their tournament opener to replace her in the squad if necessary. Otherwise, the 2023 Women's World Cup winners must go forward without the option of a late replacement.

Spain face Belgium on July 7 and Italy on July 11, and there remains cautious hope she could return in time for the latter stages—should she be deemed fit and no roster change is made before the deadline.
