Brilliant Barcelona and Aitana Bonmati are in a league of their own! Winners and losers as Ballon d'Or winner helps round off quadruple as Spanish side see off Lyon in Women's Champions League final

Barcelona made history in numerous ways on Saturday when they beat Lyon 2-0 to win a third Women's Champions League title. It capped an historic first quadruple for the women's team, saw them defend a European crown for the first time and took them third all-time in the list of UWCL winners, behind only Lyon and Frankfurt. It also gave Jonatan Giraldez, set to leave his role as coach to take charge of the Washington Spirit, the perfect farewell.

It was a result that took a lot of grit, hard work and concentration, because this was an incredibly even match. The first half was very tight, with half-chances for both teams, making it impossible at the break to predict whose name would be etched on the trophy come full-time. However, things changed just after the hour, when a sprinkle of Aitana Bonmati magic allowed her to burst into the box and, via a deflection off a super unlucky Vanessa Gilles, break the deadlock.

From there, Barca assumed control and they were never going to let go. Lyon threw everything at them but to no avail, the second goal in the match scored by the other Ballon d'Or winner in the Catalans' squad, two-time recipient Alexia Putellas, who came off the bench in stoppage-time and produced a simply world-class strike to put the result beyond doubt.

GOAL breaks down the winners & losers from San Mames...

    WINNER: Aitana Bonmati

Is it a stretch to say Bonmati's second Ballon d'Or is in the post? The midfielder shone brightest again on Saturday as Barcelona triumphed at San Mames to be crowned European champions, and a performance like that, on the biggest stage club football has to offer, means it feels incredibly likely that she will again be honoured by France Football later this year.

That's before we get to the Olympics this summer, too, where Bonmati will be central to Spain's quest to follow up their Women's World Cup triumph with a gold medal. With that in mind, something quite incredible would need to happen for anyone to pip her to that Ballon d'Or.

  • LOSER: Sonia Bompastor

That this was Bompastor's final game in charge of Lyon was disappointing. The 43-year-old has had three wonderful seasons in the dugout at the club for whom she shone as a player, winning seven trophies in that time, including the Champions League in 2022.

Before her widely-reported move to Chelsea is likely to be revealed in the coming days, it would've been a wonderful high to go out on had she made that total eight and added another European crown, then, and Lyon were well in this incredibly even game under Bonmati's game-changing strike.

However, it was not to be and to go out on this note, one which doesn't represent the success of her time in charge, will hurt.

  • WINNER: Caroline Graham Hansen

One player who will certainly be in contention for that Ballon d'Or alongside Bonmati is Caroline Graham Hansen. The winger was electric throughout the encounter in Bilbao and constantly caused the Lyon defence problems, with most of Barca's best moments in the first half in particular coming through her.

It was a performance typical of her simply incredible season, one which has produced numbers of sheer disbelief. In the league, for example, Graham Hansen has racked up 19 goals and 18 assists in just 23 games.

But the Norway star has been playing at this level for years and, somehow, she's never even made the Ballon d'Or longlist. That is absolutely going to change in a few months' time - and she's sure to be quite high up the final rankings, too.

  • LOSER: Vanessa Gilles

Gilles had a superb game on Saturday. She completed 29 of her 30 attempted passes, made a truly outstanding block to deny Mariona Caldentey in the first half and helped keep Salma Paralluelo extremely quiet. But unfortunately, it was off her that Bonmati's strike deflected to take it beyond Christiane Endler and give Barca an important lead in Bilbao.

After that moment, the Catalans felt in real control and not at all like they would let it slip. There's no doubt, then, that it will hurt Gilles that this poor slice of luck fell her way on an otherwise strong night.

  • Lucy Bronze Barcelona 2023-24Getty Images

    WINNER: Lucy Bronze

No English player, male or female, had ever won five European Cups - until Saturday. That all changed when Lucy Bronze got her hands on the Champions League trophy for the fifth time, this her second triumph with Barca after three with Lyon.

That Bronze was chosen to start this game said a lot. She has a lot of competition for that right-back spot as one of three players for the position in the Catalans' squad, alongside long-serving veteran Marta Torrejon and Ona Batlle, the 24-year-old who was signed from Manchester United last summer.

Given Batlle's top quality already and the years she has to get better, it felt like she would be the first-choice in that role, but an injury to usual left-back Fridolina Rolfo earlier this season meant Batlle has spent a lot of the campaign on the other side, with Bronze regularly starting on the right.

The England star has shown that she still has so much to offer one of the best teams in the world in those minutes, too, and was notably chosen to start in the crucial semi-final second leg against Chelsea, as well as the final in Bilbao. She had a strong game, helped nullify Lyon's threat and used her experience to help her team-mates through.

Bronze is out of contract this summer and there is a lot of talk about her future, with conflicting reports over whether or not the club has the financial means to renew her. But Saturday was a reminder of just why the club is keen to figure out a way to keep her around because she still has a lot of quality, she is a valuable member of the squad and she has been there, done it all and won it all - multiple times over.

  • LOSER: Melchie Dumornay

Europe was made well aware of Melchie Dumornay's special talent in the semi-finals of this competition, when she was Lyon's star player in a well-fought victory over bitter rivals Paris Saint-Germain. The 20-year-old has had an exciting first season with a team that has been crowned champions on the continent a remarkable eight times, dealing with the pressure and expectation admirably.

Sadly, though, she just did not get the service to be more involved on Saturday, with only three outfield players - none of whom played the full 90 minutes like Dumornay - having fewer touches. When she got on the ball, she showed how she could be a threat, but she didn't get it enough to make a genuine difference in this match.

  • WINNER: Alexia Putellas

It's been a tricky season for Putellas. The midfielder suffered an ACL injury in the summer of 2022 which ruled her out for almost the entire 2022-23 season and, in that time, the club signed Keira Walsh to add quality to the midfield in her absence, and the England star has settled brilliantly. It's meant that Putellas has spent a lot more time on the bench this season than she has been previously used to, most notably in the big games.

That was the case again on Saturday when Giraldez picked a midfield three of Patri Guijarro, Walsh and Bonmati, with Putellas entering the game as a substitute in stoppage time. Yet, her brief involvement was a reminder that she is indeed a two-time Ballon d'Or winner and one of the best players on the planet.

After Guijarro had raced over and ensured she came onto the field with her captain's armband, such is her role as a leader in this team, Putellas made one great tackle in her own box to thwart Dumornay and then she capped Barca's win at the other end with a world-class finish in the final moments.

What her role looks like next season - under a new coach, it's worth noting - is going to be fascinating, especially after she just signed a bumper new deal.
