The Minnesota Golden Gophers will raise the curtain on the 2025 college football season Thursday night when they welcome the Buffalo Bulls to Huntington Bank Stadium.
Buffalo rolls into the year riding momentum from a strong 2024 campaign, where they went 9-4 overall and 6-2 in MAC play under first-year head coach Pete Lembo. The Bulls ended last season on a five-game heater, capped by a convincing 26-7 win over Liberty in the Bahamas Bowl.
Minnesota, meanwhile, wrapped up an 8-5 season under the ever-energetic P.J. Fleck, who now embarks on his ninth year at the helm with a 58-49 record in the Twin Cities. The Gophers finished last year on a high note as well, knocking off Virginia Tech 24-10 in the Duke’s Mayo Bowl.

Minnesota vs Buffalo team news & key players
Minnesota Golden Gophers team news
The Gophers, on the other hand, will hand the keys to their offense to redshirt freshman Drake Lindsey, who saw the field sparingly last season with just five pass attempts. Luckily for Lindsey, Minnesota’s ground game remains its bread and butter. Junior tailback Darius Taylor returns after pounding out 986 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2024, running behind a line that should once again open plenty of lanes.
Defensively, the Gophers boast six returning starters, headlined by rising star safety Koi Perich and big-bodied defensive tackle Deven Eastern, both of whom will be central figures in slowing down Buffalo’s playmakers.
Buffalo Bulls team news
For Buffalo, veteran signal-caller Ta’Quan Roberson takes the reins of the offense after stints at Penn State, UConn, and Kansas State. He’ll have the comfort of leaning on one of the MAC’s premier backs in Al-Jay Henderson, who rushed for 1,078 yards and nine touchdowns last fall, and a go-to target in Victor Snow, a polished wideout who pulled in 55 catches for 651 yards and six scores.
