The 2025 Copa Libertadores semifinals are set to kick off, with Ecuadorian side LDU Quito welcoming three-time champions Palmeiras for the first leg of their clash on Thursday night.
LDU Quito, who lifted the trophy for the first and only time back in 2008, enter this stage as underdogs but have already proven their mettle. The Ecuadorian outfit have battled their way past two Brazilian heavyweights, last year's champions Botafogo and Sao Paulo, in successive knockout rounds to reach this point. They also finished top of a challenging group featuring Flamengo, who are contesting the other semifinal against Racing Club of Argentina.
Palmeiras, meanwhile, fell 3–2 to Flamengo in domestic action over the weekend but have looked formidable throughout this year’s Libertadores campaign. Abel Ferreira's men breezed through the group phase with a perfect six wins from six, before comfortably dispatching Universitario and River Plate in the knockouts. The Verdao also impressed internationally earlier this year, reaching the Club World Cup semifinals before bowing out to Chelsea, and have maintained their strong form despite the summer departures of star winger Estevao and midfielder Richard Rios.

Team news & squads
LDU de Quito team news
For LDU Quito, the biggest fitness concern remains forward Alejandro Cabeza, who has missed the last five fixtures through injury. Chilean midfielder Fernando Cornejo is also unavailable, serving a one-match suspension after accumulating five yellow cards.
The absence of striker Alex Arce, who moved to Independiente Rivadavia in Argentina after registering five goal involvements (4 goals, 1 assist) in six Libertadores outings, is another blow. Veteran attacker Lisandro Alzugaray will therefore shoulder the attacking burden, having led the way for the club in this year's tournament with four goals in 10 appearances.
Palmeiras team news
Palmeiras, on the other hand, will be without three key players—Paulinho (leg), Lucas Evangelista (hamstring), and goalkeeper Weverton (finger).
Captain Gustavo Gomez will again marshal the backline, while 20-year-old Vitor Roque is tipped to start up front in a two-man strike force. The young forward has been in blistering form, netting 10 times in his last nine outings, including four goals in eight Libertadores appearances.
