The Auburn Tigers (1-0) welcome the Ball State Cardinals (0-1) to Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday night, September 6, with kickoff set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ESPNU.
Ball State is coming off a rough 2024 campaign, finishing 3-9 in what turned out to be head coach Mike Neu's final season. The Cardinals stumbled through Mid-American Conference play with just two wins, ending ahead of only a winless Kent State side.
Their three victories came against Missouri State, Kent State, and Northern Illinois, but the year closed on a sour note with four straight defeats to Miami-Ohio, Buffalo, Bowling Green, and Ohio. The struggles have carried into 2025 as well, with Ball State opening the season 0-1 after being blanked 31-0 by Purdue last weekend.
On the flip side, Auburn didn’t exactly light it up last season either. In Hugh Freeze’s second year at the helm, the Tigers finished 5-7 overall and 2-6 in SEC play, placing them ahead of just Kentucky and Mississippi State.
A midseason four-game skid derailed their hopes, though they did manage to rally with wins over Kentucky, Louisiana-Monroe, and Texas A&M before falling to archrival Alabama in the Iron Bowl, which officially shut the door on bowl eligibility. Fast forward to 2025, and Auburn got things rolling in their opener with a lively 38-24 victory on the road against Baylor.

Quarterback Jackson Arnold showed his dual-threat chops, throwing for 108 yards on 11-of-17 passing while tearing up the ground with 137 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. He wasn’t the only one making noise in the run game, as Damari Alston added 84 yards and a score, while Jeremiah Cobb chipped in 74 yards and a touchdown of his own. Malcolm Simmons made the most of his single reception, hauling in a 26-yard grab to lead the receiving corps.

In the last matchup, quarterback Kiael Kelly completed 10-of-16 passes for just 87 yards, while also leading the ground game with 63 rushing yards on 22 carries. Elijah Jackson's lone 37-yard reception was the only real spark in an otherwise flat performance.
