The Houston Cougars and the No.24Arizona State Sun Devils are set to clash Saturday night at Sun Devil Stadium in what promises to be a fascinating non-conference showdown between two programs trying to keep their seasons on track.

For Houston, it’s been a tale of early dominance followed by a reality check. The Cougars opened the campaign on fire, ripping through their first four opponents—Stephen F. Austin, Rice, Colorado, and Oregon State—with commanding performances on both sides of the ball.

Their momentum came to a screeching halt on October 4, when they were thumped 35-11 by Texas Tech, marking their first stumble of the season. But the Cougars didn’t let that loss linger. They responded in style the following week, delivering a statement win on the road against Oklahoma State, where they found the end zone in every quarter—including double-digit scoring bursts in three of them—to reestablish their rhythm.

Meanwhile, Arizona State also burst out of the gates strong, winning four of its first five contests. The only setback during that stretch came in a narrow 24-20 defeat to Mississippi State. The Sun Devils took care of business against Northern Arizona, Texas State, Baylor, and TCU, but things took a harsh turn when they ran into a buzzsaw in Utah. In that 42-10 loss, Arizona State’s defense was gashed for 412 total yards—276 of which came on the ground—while allowing 7.5 yards per play and 23 first downs. Offensively, the Sun Devils couldn’t find a groove, mustering just 259 total yards and an underwhelming 3.3 yards per snap in a night to forget.
