'I would leave' - Frenkie de Jong sends out warning to Barcelona as Dutchman discusses future plans

De Jong has been struggling to reproduce the same sort of form at Barcelona that he showed with Ajax and, as such, his future with the Catalan club has been a source of regular speculation over the last few seasons. The Dutchman has regularly insisted he wants to stay at the Camp Nou but now admits he's not guaranteed to spend his whole career with Barca.

De Jong's current contract runs until 2026 and the Dutchman has previously attracted interest from Manchester United and Bayern Munich. The 27-year-old has now spoken out on what the future holds for him and admits he could be prised away from the Catalan club.

Speaking to Voetbal International, De Jong said: "People think I want to stay at Barcelona forever because life outside of football is so good here, and that's good, but what happens on the pitch is always more important. If I felt like I couldn't contribute enough, or if the team wasn't competitive, I would leave."

De Jong also added that he hoped that more success would follow him when he joined Barcelona and said: "When I signed for Barcelona, I didn't imagine to win only a La Liga, Copa del Rey and Spanish Super Cup after 4 years. I expected at least double, so that disappoints me. Things happen on the road you can't predict”

The Dutch midfielder has not been a regular under Hansi Flick this season as he continues to feel the effects of an ankle injury that kept him out for four months earlier this year. He could, however, see playing time when Barcelona take on fourth-tier side UD Barbastro in the Copa del Rey round of 32 on Saturday, January 4.
